Buying the correct type of Lockers for your Business or School

With such a wide range of lockers available if can be difficult to decide which type is best suited for your particular requirements. In this report we try to outline what is available and how best to decide on the type most suitable for you – so to help you start we have prioritised the most important points as follows:

What types of lockers are there?
There are many different types of lockers to suit all applications as follows:
Steel Lockers – suitable for Industry and Education, the most popular by far
Wooden Lockers – more suitable for Leisure Centres, Golf Clubs and Education
Plastic Lockers - suitable for use in damp areas, can be used inside or outside but not waterproof
Wire Lockers – suitable for use in wet or damp areas and where visual identification of contents is required without unlocking the unit
Stainless Steel lockers – quite expensive but very often a requirement in the food industry
Garment Lockers – required for the issuing of clean and dirty overalls

PPE Lockers – the Personal Protection Equipment at work regulations 1992 required the provision of suitable storage to protect personal protective equipment from damage, contamination or loss 
Laptop Lockers -  provides secure storage facility for laptops
Laptop Re-Charge Lockers - provides secure storage facility for laptops whilst re-charging in situ
Post Lockers – Specifically designed for use in large organisations where internal or external mail can be sorted and posted into a locked compartment to be accessed by the user only
Police Lockers – extra large lockers designed especially for the Police Force
Mobile Phone Lockers – more and more establishments are banning mobile phones from being taken into building. This locker provides a small secure key operated locker for the visitor or staff to put their personal phone in
Personal Item Lockers – provide a small amount of storage space to store a handbag etc securely
Cube Lockers – a small square locker for personal or small item storage available in three sizes which can be stacked or placed in any configuration

What are lockers made from?
Steel Lockers
The most popular lockers are manufactured from Steel and powder coated with an Anti-bacterial powder coating which provides an effective solution to fight bacterial contamination for the life of the coating. Suitable for inside use.
Wooden Lockers
Constructed with a steel carcass with wooden effect laminate doors and side panels providing a smart appearance for use in Clubs, Leisure Centres, Schools, Golf Clubs and anywhere a more up market look is required. Suitable for inside use only. 
Plastic Lockers
Manufactured by a rotationally moulded process which produce a virtually rustproof locker for use indoors or outdoors. Due to the way these lockers are produced this range is limited to small sizes, the largest being half a full height locker, Therefore, these lockers are usually stacked 2 high to achieve a full height locker.
Clear-View Lockers – With clear Perspex panels to enable visual identification of contents without unlocking
Wire Lockers - Constructed from zinc plated wire mesh and suitable for use in damp areas and fitted with legs as standard to enable floor washing without contaminating locker contents
Stainless Steel Lockers
Manufactured from 304 quality Stainless Steel sheet with a brushed polish finish
Disability Lockers – Manufactured to a special height for disabled users
Golf Lockers – usually combined with stand and seat and designed to accept a set of golf clubs 

What door combinations are available?
Single Compartment
A single full height door providing personal storage for one person. Complete with a fixed hat shelf and double coat hook.
Two Compartments     
Providing two separate compartments each with a double coat hook.
Three Compartments
With three individual compartments
Four Compartments
With four individual compartments
Six Compartments
With six individual compartments
Eight Compartments
With eight small individual compartments
Nest of Lockers
Steel lockers are available in nests of 2 or 3 lockers (depending on the size) giving a small price advantage. Please note it is very difficult to move nests of lockers so this should be considered before deciding to     purchase these

What type of doors are there? 

Solid Door

A sheet steel door with ventilation holes or slots
Perforated Door
The perforated doors provide increased ventilation and allow the contents to be inspected whilst remaining closed
Wire Mesh Doors
Offering excellent ventilation and high visual storage
Laminate Doors
have a solid door panel fitted to a steel carcass
Clear View
Doors have Perspex panels to provide visual identification of contents without unlocking

What overall heights are available?
The standard size locker is 1800mm height with a depth of 300mm and a width of 300, 380 or 450mm. But also available are 1370mm height lockers particularly suitable for School
           
Locker accessories?
Sloping Tops
Stops items being stored on top of the locker
Stands
Raises the locker 150mm off of the floor to provide for cleaning underneath
Stand/Seats
Incorporating a slatted seat and stand enabling the user to sit down and change shoes etc. Particularly suitable for use in a Sports Clubs or Leisure Centres

What type of locks are available?
For Steel and Plastic Lockers
Cam locks

Are fitted as standard to Steel, Laminate and Plastic lockers. Each compartment has a different key number and complete with two keys. Master keys are also available as an extra
Coin Operated Locks
Stops keys getting lost. Usually work with a £1 coin which the lock retains when you enter the coin and remove the key. After returning the key the coin is returned to the user. 
Twist Lock
This lock doesn’t use a key but closes like a  latch. Especially suitable for primary school children. Can be used in conjunction with a padlock if required
For Wire Mesh Lockers
Hasp and staple fitting suitable for a padlock. Not available with Cam Locks or Twist Locks

What Colours are available?
Most lockers have a Light Grey Carcass with a choice of door colours in Dark Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Pastel Blue, Light Grey, Dark Grey, and Maroon
